William Shakespeare

Have you heard of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, or Macbeth? Maybe you’ve heard someone say "forgive and forget" or "all’s well that ends well." These are the works and sayings of the famous playwright and poet William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare was born in England during the mid-1500s. He received a good education as a young boy. When he was eighteen years old, he married a woman named Anne Hathaway. By the time he turned thirty, Shakespeare had a career in London as a playwright. He also started writing poetry. Thus began a very productive career.

During the time that Shakespeare lived, people entertained themselves by attending and performing in plays. Shakespeare was an actor in many plays, but he is famous for the many plays and poems that he wrote. There are thirty-seven plays and over fifty sonnets credited to Shakespeare. He liked to have fun with language and invented many new phrases.

Many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed at the Globe Theater. The Globe Theater was a three-story, open-air amphitheater. It was a round structure with a stage in the middle. It had no roof and could hold three thousand people. Many would gather there to watch the plays performed by Shakespeare’s theater company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men.

Some skeptics believe that someone else wrote the plays that are credited to Shakespeare. There are many theories. Some scholars think a few of the plays look like the work of other playwrights at the time. Some suggest that a member of the royal family wrote the plays but needed to remain anonymous. However, there has never been reliable evidence to prove any of these ideas.

Shakespeare died in 1616. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church in England. His works have endured over many generations. They are still acted out on stage all over the world, and many have been adapted again and again.
