LEAP 2025 ELA Grade 8 Chapter Unit Test 1 Sample

Kathy invited Misty to her house to work on their science project, but Kathy had no idea what a visit from Misty entailed. First of all, it was raining, and Misty did not take her muddy boots off or wipe them on the doormat. Then, Misty ate a bag of hot chips on Kathy’s white bedspread without asking, and Misty wiped her red stained greasy hands all over the bedspread. Kathy tried to be polite and ignore Misty’s sloppy behavior, but then Misty threw her empty bag on the floor. Kathy was furious and asked Misty to leave. The next day, Kathy asked her science teacher if she could work on the project by herself. After explaining her situation, the teacher allowed Kathy to work alone. Misty never finished the science project because she spilled her chocolate milkshake all over the assignment instructions, so Misty received a zero for not completing the project.

A Thief’s Surprise

1 Andrea and her brother, Dan, arrived early that afternoon and parked their car near the parade route for the annual Christmas Parade. Many shops had closed along the parade route. Dan enthusiastically watched the parade. He wanted to hear his school’s band perform the music they had worked on so hard all semester. Meanwhile, Andrea went window shopping at the glass storefronts nearby. Suddenly she noticed a flash of light to her left. It came from the reflection of a man’s watch. He was looking intensely into the music store window nearby.

2 Dan was listening intently as the school band marched by. The music was so loud it was deafening. At the same moment, Andrea glanced to the left and noticed the same man, just before he used a sledgehammer to break through the glass window of the music store. In shock, Andrea ran to get her brother. She screamed, "Dan, come here!" However, he could not hear her above the sounds of the marching band. In desperation, she grabbed Dan from behind and turned him around. "Dan, there is a man down the street who is robbing a music store!" Dan was the star wrestler on his school team and was ready to put his talents to good use. He ran as fast as he could.

3 Dan arrived at the music store at the same time that the thief was coming out of the store, clutching an expensive electric guitar. Luckily for Dan, the thief did not have a gun. In an expeditious manner, Dan put the thief into a headlock and forced him to the sidewalk. By then, Andrea had found a police officer, who then arrested the would-be larcenist.
